Creating a Custom Journal with the Clear Scraps Small Oval Journal Cover

For this project, I’m sharing a journal I created using the Clear Scraps Small Oval Journal Cover. I designed this as a make-and-take at a recent retreat using a fun, crafty-themed paper collection — and it was such a hit!

At first glance, these journal covers can seem a little intimidating, but they are actually so easy to assemble. Once you create one, you’ll see just how simple the process is — and the design possibilities are truly endless.

One of my favorite design tips is to use coordinating but contrasting patterned papers for the spine. This adds visual interest and gives the finished journal a polished, custom look without any extra effort. You can keep things bold and graphic or soft and subtle depending on the papers you choose.

For our make-and-take, we focused on assembling and decorating the cover. The inside pages were left open for everyone to personalize later. These journal cover kits are wonderfully versatile — you can sew in traditional junk journal signatures using the needle and thread included in the kit, or create custom page inserts using a variety of techniques like folded booklets, layered cardstock pages, envelopes, or interactive elements.

That flexibility is what makes these covers so fun. Whether you’re creating a junk journal, memory keeper, creative notebook, or gift, you can truly make it your own.

If you’ve been curious about creating your own journal, this is your sign to try one! The Clear Scraps Small Oval Journal Cover makes it easy to design something completely unique.
