A Season of Joy: Accordion Concertina Art Journal

Hi, friends! Patricia here with another creative adventure for Clear Scraps! This time, I'm sharing a project that took a delightful twist. My initial plan to create a junk journal didn’t pan out (not enough "junk mail" on hand), so I pivoted to one of my favorite projects: an Accordion Concertina Art Journal. This journal was made using the versatile 5 x 11 Regular Chip Slimline Album, and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out!

What I adore about this type of journal is its endless possibilities. Whether it’s art journaling, memory-keeping, or experimenting with different techniques, this format is a perfect canvas for creativity.

For the covers, I used two panels from the slimline album pack (my pack came with five panels). Using white glue and a brayer, I adhered pieces of painted abstract paper I made last week. I experimented with incorporating black into my color palette, which is a rare choice for me, and I absolutely loved the result.

To add a bit more flair, I layered a strip of yellow paper and some coordinating washi tape to cover the full panel. The bold colors and clean lines created a vibrant base for the journal.

For extra depth and dimension, I turned to the ClearScraps 6-inch Polka Dots Stencil paired with TH texture paste and teal acrylic paint. I applied the stencil over the painted covers, creating playful white polka dots that added contrast and brought the abstract design to life. This look reminds me of the lights at night at Christmas time in the city.

This step was my favorite—there’s something magical about watching the texture and layers transform a simple panel into something dynamic and full of personality.

For the inner pages, I used 11 x 17 cardstock, trimming each sheet to 11 x 15 before folding them into 5 x 11 sections. I connected the folded panels with white glue, securing them with clothespins while they dried. The result is a sturdy and functional accordion journal that fits perfectly inside the slimline covers.

I embrace joy in every season of life, and my plan is to create one of these journals each month to document my thoughts, feelings, and creative inspirations. This process has been such a joy to work on, and I hope it inspires you to make your own version.
