Have you tried to scrap a layout using this idea? I've started off this layout on a blank acrylic sheet by Clear Scraps. I like how I could create a scene layout with part of it being transparent and I could see the actual world through it. The areas in white on the layout are actually see through areas.
Here's another picture of it to explain it.
I really love the look of how everything seems to be floating.
