There is something so comforting about the reminder that when our foundation is in Christ, we can stand firm—even when the storms come.

For this Bible journaling page, I wanted to create a design around Matthew 7:24–25 and the words “built on the rock.” The brick pattern was the perfect way to represent a strong foundation, while the clouds and soft blue tones create the feeling of a stormy sky giving way to something brighter.

I started by applying a layer of clear gesso to the Bible page and allowing it to dry completely. This gives the page a little more surface texture and helps protect the paper while working with inks and stencils.

Once the gesso was dry, I began building the background with my Clear Scraps stencils.

I used the 6×6 Stripes Stencil across the middle of the page with green ink. I kept the stripes somewhat imperfect and varied the pressure so the background would have that soft, mixed-media look.

Next, I moved to the bottom of the page and used the 6×6 Brick Stencil with blue and green ink. The brick pattern became the foundation for the entire design, tying directly into the message of the verse.

For the upper portion of the page, I added the 6×6 Cloud Stencil using shades of blue. I layered the clouds and allowed some of the white of the Bible page to remain visible so the background wouldn’t become too heavy.

I added a cross with the 6″ Roman Cross Stencil in green in the upper left of the clouds to bring the focus back to Christ. I added some small doodle details throughout the page to help balance the design.

I used a mixture of Thickers and my own handwriting to complete the title, Built on the Rock. Finally, I drew a rectangle around the verse to highlight it and make it easier to spo.t

When stenciling, don’t worry about making every stencil impression perfect. I actually love the imperfect edges and variations in color because they add to the handmade, mixed-media feel of Bible journaling.

Sometimes the little imperfections are what make the finished page feel like yours.

I love how this page came together—and especially how the stenciled bricks became part of the message. Matthew 7:24–25 is such a beautiful reminder that storms are going to come, but when we build our lives on Christ, we have a foundation that will hold us steady.

Bible journaling doesn’t have to be complicated or perfect. A few stencils, some ink, a little creativity, and a verse that speaks to your heart are all you need to create something meaningful.
