Clear Scraps Project Post

Bible journaling is one of my favorite ways to slow down, spend time in Scripture, and get creative at the same time. For this page, I wanted to create a bright, joyful design around Psalm 118:24: “This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” I used several Clear Scraps stencils and chipboard pieces along with inks, chalks, and a few embellishments from my stash to create a page full of color, texture, and encouragement.

I started by using the Clear Scraps 6″ Cheetah Stencil and inking the leopard pattern around the page. I knew I wanted the pattern to remain visible as part of the background, so I kept the design lighter in some areas and more prominent in others. Once I was happy with the leopard print, I applied clear gesso to the areas where I planned to add additional layers. This allowed me to continue building the design while still allowing the printed Scripture underneath to show through.

Next, I added the sunburst. Using the Clear Scraps 4×6 Sunrise Stencil, I first used a pencil to roughly sketch where I wanted the rays to extend from behind the cross. I then used several shades of yellow ink to build the sunburst, allowing the colors to vary rather than trying to make every ray identical. I added additional detail and warmth with orange pastel chalk, which helped soften the edges and gave the sunburst a more blended, organic appearance.

For the cross, I used turquoise pastel chalk over the gessoed area. I love how easily the chalk blended, so I used my fingers to soften the edges and create a slightly distressed, watercolor-like effect. The turquoise gives the cross plenty of contrast against the warm yellow and orange background while still coordinating with the other colors on the page.

I also added a chipboard house from the Clear Scraps Chipboard Embellishments Punchout HOME, which I inked to coordinate with the page. I loved the idea of including a little house on this page as a reminder of the blessings found in our everyday lives and the places we call home. The house also adds dimension and gives the lower portion of the page another visual focal point.

Once the background and larger elements were finished, I turned my attention to the details surrounding the Scripture. I used Thickers and alphabet stickers to create the “THIS IS THE DAY” title and added the large 118 and “REJOICE” elements near the bottom of the page. I also added small hearts, dots, and other embellishments around the verse to draw the eye toward Psalm 118:24 and emphasize the message of the page.

I really enjoyed letting the Scripture itself guide the design of this page. Rather than adding lots of journaling or covering the surrounding verses, I wanted the page to feel bright and joyful while still keeping the words of Scripture easy to read. The combination of the leopard print, sunburst, turquoise cross, and pops of color created a fun background while allowing “This is the day” and “REJOICE” to stand out as the main message.

I love how versatile Clear Scraps stencils are and how easily they can be incorporated into projects beyond traditional scrapbooking and home décor. Using the stencils with ink, chalk, and mixed-media techniques gave me completely different effects, and the chipboard house added another layer of dimension to the page.
